Day 18

lighthouseI’m thankful to have wonderful mentors in my life.

For a loooooong time, I did not have anybody that I saw as my mentor (well, maybe except for my parents), and I remember, at one point in my life, I was asking people around me, “How do you find a mentor?”

Since I started my journey to become a VA though, I’ve been finding my mentors everywhere! Was it just a timing or my mindset? Or I just did not know that they were around me before? I dunno…

But, it’s wonderful to know that I have these wonderful people that I can model, respect, and get encouragement from. Thank you all… You are playing a big part in my growth.

Day 17

Today was a spacial 3-hour training day at my older two boys’ Judo dojo. They were still recovering from the stomach flu and were not eager to go to dojo in the morning, but once they got there, they had so much fun!

They have been practicing Judo for about 1-1/2 yrs now. We were very fortunate to find a wonderful dojo with dedicated sensei, instructors, supporters, and parents. My boys are learning not only the Judo techniques, but also the discipline, respect, sportmanship, and teamwork.

I’m so thankful to the wonderful people we met there. :)

parkDay 16

I’ve been suffering from this migrane headache for the last couple days. Grrrrrr…. Well, maybe it’s a sign that I should take more rest.

When you have little kids, it’s hard to take a break whenenver you want to, LOL. Today, however, I was able to take extra naps thanks to my wonderful husband, and also thanks to my three kids. The boys were having so much fun playing with each other, I did not have to worry about moderating or anything. ;) Watching them play gave me some huge smiles in spite of my headache.

Siblings are wonderful. I myself grew up with my younger sister, and to date, she is my best friend.

Today, I’m grateful that my boys have each other. I’m so looking forward to seeing them grow up together.

Day 15

docSo, after Shay-shay’s birthday yesterday, I was thinking about the day when each of my 3 boys was born. They were all born via C-section.

I had to go through an emergency C-section with the first one… If it weren’t for C-section, neither I nor my boys would not have been here. A scary thought!

Today, I’m thankful for the progress in the medical field, doctors, nurses, and everybody in the medical profession.

Day 14

cakeHappy birthday, my youngest baby boy! Oh well, now that he is TWO, he is probably not a baby anymore, but in my mind, he will always be my baby. (BTW, have you read Love You Forever by Robert Munsch? I still BAWL every time I read that book…)

His nickname is Shay-shay, or “Xie xie” which means “Thank you” in Chinese. Really!

So many things happened to our family during the past several years, and our lifestyle has changed dramatically. Throughtout the process, it was our little Shay-shay who reminded us of what is truly important to us.

Here is my big Xie xie to you, love.

I’ll love you forever,
I’ll like you for always,
As long as I’m living
my baby you‘ll be.

Day 13

peanutOne of my boys was diagnosed with a peanut allergy when he experienced anaphylaxis after eating a saltine cracker with peanut butter at a daycare center. He was a little over 1 year old back then. I had never thought that anybody in my family would have such an allergy. I’m healthy as a horse and do not have any allergy or chronic condition (which I’m also so grateful for!). My husband suffers from seasonal allergies, but he can eat anything. Needless to say, we knew nothing about peanut allergy back then.

We immediately started our research on the subject to protect our son. The more we learned, the more we felt we would need help from people around us. Peanuts are everywhere!! Parents send their kids to school with P&J sandwiches, birthday party goodie bags are often filled with M&Ms and Reese candies, etc… But, not many people understood how scary the allergy was. I remember indirectly receiving a nasty comment when I asked the daycare parents to please avoid including nut products in any birthday goodie bags.

Over the past several years, the level of awareness of peanut allergy has significantly gone up. Most schools have peanut-free lunch tables, and increasing number of schools are becoming completely peanut-free. Many school personnel are getting trained to administer Epi-pen. With more and more kids being diagnosed with this allergy these days, more parents seem to understand how scary the allergy could be.

I am so thankful to the organizations, medical professionals, school staff, and parents’ groups that have been trying hard to educate the general public on the allergy. Without their efforts, it would have been much harder to even send my son to school.

Day 12

starsI love looking at the night sky. There is somthing about the stars that simply fascinates me.

In Tokyo, where I used to live, you just can’t see a whole lot of stars because:

  • there are so many tall buildings, and the range of the sky you can see is pretty limited.
  • there are city lights everywhere!

I used to go to a planatarium all by myself back then just to see the stars. Really!

Here in Southern California, we can see a lot more stars, although not as many as in most cities in the world. It feels as if the time stops when I get mesmerized by all the stars I can see. It’s an amazing feeling. The stars make me realize that all the little everyday worries are nothing. So, thank you, all the twinkles!

(I once mention this to a friend who was dipressed at that time, trying to help him feel better. But he just said, “Well,  thinking about stars and universe just makes me feel so puny, and I get even more depressed.” So I guess this kind of thinking doesn’t work for everyone. Oh well…)

Are you scared of hiring an assistant?

handshakeI don’t know if it’s just me, but I find that many people I follow (via social networking or their newsletters) or talk to tend to discuss the same topic within a period of several weeks. About a couple of months ago, I felt everybody was talking about time management, and then, a month ago, every newsletter I received seemed to be focusing on stepping out of your comfort zone. Am I seeing that famous laws of attraction in action?

And this past 2 weeks, the same thing happened around the topic of outsourcing. What a great topic for us Virtual Assistants. ;)

Many experts agree that, to grow your business, you need to hire help at some point. Some people go even further to say, “outsourcing is the only way to take your business to the next level.” And who doesn’t want to grow his/her business? But the reality is that the majority of solopreneurs out there are still trying to take care of every aspect of their business by themselves.

Why?

After speaking with many solopreneurs since I started my VA practice, I noticed many of them have a fear around outsourcing their work. Fear, you ask? Yes, here are the main ones I identified:

  • fear of letting things go
  • fear of running out of the things to delegate
  • fear of hiring somebody you do not know
  • fear of creating work (to find somebody, to manage him/her, to come up with a delegation list and to set up a procedure for others handle tasks for you)
  • fear of incurring extra *monetary* expenses

This may sound funny, but some of my current clients have provided the answers to getting over most of the fears above while talking to me here and there in the past. I just love my clients! So, I’d love to share some here, hoping to help you look at things differently.

When you are hanging on to all the little tasks that you don’t even enjoy, you get stressed out. I felt so liberated when I gave xxx (insert a task name) to you! Now I don’t need to think about that.

Many people do not realize that there are so many things they can delegate to their assistants. Mika, you should probably do up a list so that people would know.

I noticed many people do not even know where to go find an assistant (or any kind of help for that matter). They should just ask around.

Partnering up with an assistant is an investment. People should put aside some extra time at the beginning to find help and to build a right relationship. Soon, they will find they have more time to take care of better things.

If you don’t want to spend too much time creating a system for your busines, you can ask your assistant to help you create one.

People are so concerned about expenses these days, and they don’t even realize how much you can do for your business by hiring an assistant.

I intentionally did not look at the fees until I finished asking all other questions during the interview process. Fees sure can be one of the important factors when hiring somebody, but should not be the biggest determining factor. Otherwise, you may miss an opportunity to work with a perfect assistant who could eventually save you lots of time and money by working with you.

I know that an assistant with a lower hourly rate cannot necessarily take care of the things as quickly as somebody with a higher rate. Also, you may end up having to spend so much time explaining task details to an assistant A, while assistant B would understand your needs without having to be told everything step-by-step. So, going with an assistant only because his/her rate is reasonable does not make sense to me at all.

Speaking of hourly rates, one of my fab clients recently taught me about “Efficiency Wages”, a term used to describe a theory in economics. I’m not referring it here to convince you to hire an expensive assistant, but to encourage you to look at other important factors before making a judgment solely based on the fees. Most of the outsourcing nightmare stories I hear seem to have something to do with hiring an assistant without having a deep-level conversation before starting to work together.

Remember, you will be building your business with a help from your assistant(s). Make sure you’ll partner up with somebody who is just right for you! (See this post by Melanie Benson Strick… It’s so true!)

Partnering up with an assistant should be a fun experience, not a torture. If you decide to explore the world of working with an assistant, look at it as an exciting adventure! Like many things in life, it may be scary to do it for the first time, but once you’ve done it, you’ll notice it’s not scary at all.

Day 11

secretIt’s already been several years since I was first introduced to the Law of Attraction via The Secret.

People tend to focus on attracting what they want when they talk about LofA, but the biggest takeaway from that book/video for me was the realization that:

I am responsible for absolutely everything that happens to me. Good or bad – doesn’t matter. Absolutely everything!

What an A-HA it was! I no longer feel I am a victim of circumstances — because *I* am in charge of my life.

I’m so grateful that I was introduced to it when I really needed that. (And a very personal thank you goes to my dear mom Bonnie for encouraging me to read the book. :) )

Day 10

My husband and I moved to where we currently live about 10 years ago, mainly due to the jobs that we had back then. Now that neither of us really have a j.o.b., that reason is long gone.

But we just love this neighborhood! It’s old, and not upscale or anything (LOL). However, it’s a wonderful place to raise a family. It’s like a good old-time neighborhood where everybody knows everybody. :)

I’m grateful that we made that decision 10 years ago to live in this area, and I’m so thankful for the wonderful neighbors we have!
